Effective Organisation: Overview

Creating an effective organisation stems from the organisation being able to do the things it needs to do with minimum use of resource. In fact “not doing things that don’t need to be done” is perhaps the single biggest contribution to becoming truly effective. Making tasks simpler so there is less work, avoiding mistakes so that there is no rework, introducing quality systems to get things done consistently, investing in training to enable a task to be done quicker are all examples.

However, the organisation doesn’t become more effective spontaneously. It requires time, effort, know-how and will. Individuals, particularly those with management responsibilities need to have the skills and competencies to analyse what is going on, to propose solutions to problems, and implement the changes in the workplace and to have the confidence that consistent long-term improvement is what will make the organisation competitive.

If the gains in effectiveness are not to be eroded, the whole process needs to be set in a culture of continuous improvement, so that each improvement builds on its predecessors and is not lost just as easily as it was gained through apathy or through attention shifting else where. You can read our article “The Continuous Improvement Principle” if you would to explore this further.

Effective Organisation: Our Approach

We believe that the people who will really know what needs to be done to make your organisation effective are your employees. They are closest to the action and know what your customers are thinking. What they need is the time, the space, the tools and the support to get things right. They must be at the forefront of the drive towards becoming an effective organisation.

Our job is therefore to introduce your people to the processes and tools that they can use, to coach them in their use until they feel ready to use them on their own, and to provide help, encouragement and ideas to you, your managers and your employees as you strive to become an effective organisation.

You can gain further insight into this approach by reading our article “Making Change Happen Through People”.

Effective Organisation: When to use this approach

Introducing new processes, selecting improvement teams, getting individuals trained and motivated and setting out to build an effective organisation through continuous improvement is obviously not a trivial task. There is a cost of engagement which means that the approach is going to be most valuable when the organisation is looking to make significant savings.
Case study literature from the manufacturing community, where the continuous improvement approach to organisational effectiveness was spawned, suggests that productivity savings of the order of 25% can be achieved.

As a topical example, in its approach to balancing the public budget, the UK government is targeting annual savings of £15bn per year using the continuous improvement approach in key areas where the current annual budget is around £150bn.

The continuous improvement approach to the effective organisation is the approach to adopt when you are serious about generating savings.
