Overview
What motivates an employee is a complex issue, but the one thing that everyone agrees on is that if you do it successfully and consistently the benefit to the organisation is huge. Not all the factors that govern the motivation of an individual are necessarily under the control of the organisation but there are enough things that the organisation can do in both a positive and a negative sense that make it essential the organisation considers the impact of its actions on the motivation of its staff.
The starting point is to monitor how people go about their work and look for changes. The organisation needs to know whether the individual is facing their tasks positively or whether they are beginning to submerge. Performance Management systems and survey results on employee motivation can generate the data. Managers need to analyse the data to understand how individuals and groups are responding.
Benefits and recognition play an important part in motivating individuals but there is much else that helps. Clarifying job roles, making sure that people are fully trained, developing additional skills, coaching, career plans and performance management are just a few of the levers under the organisation’s control.
